MIAS AWARD LEVEL 1/2 & 3

MIAS (Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme) is one of the most respectful Mountain-bike Guide – Instructor qualifications as well as a basic prerequisite for working with many MTB organizations and Cycling Travel companies across Europe.

MIAS) Mountain-bike Leader Level One (MBL1) NON-TECHNICAL, Level Two (MBL2) TECHNICAL και Level Three (MBL3) MOUNTAINOUS is aimed at people wishing to lead groups in mountain bike activities.

The qualification is widely used by the following organizations: independent mountain bike guides, mountain bike holiday companies, teachers, military personnel, police service, youth leaders and scout leaders. The qualification will allow the successful award holder to lead and instruct adults and children on technical and non-technical ground within Europe.

The course is a recognised qualification and is validated through the NVQ Awarding Body of NCFE. The course has accreditation with: European Organisation of Mountain Bike Instructor-Guides, The Association of British Cycle Coaches, Cyclists Touring Club (CTC), The Adventure Activities Licencing Authority (AALA), Learning Outside The Classroom Badge, Innovate Awarding and the NVQ Awarding Body of NCFE.

The ratios of 1:6 should be adhered to at all times & the award holder must hold a current valid first aid qualification to operate as a leader / instructor.

LEVEL ONE NON-TECHNICAL (MBL1)

 

MIAS – Level 1: Mountain Bike Leader / Instructor Qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of individuals in non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc).

LEVEL TWO TECHNICAL (MBL2)

 

MIAS – Level 2: Mountain Bike Leader / Instructor Qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of individuals in technical and demanding terrain.

MOUNTAIN BIKE LEADER QUALIFICATIONS

 

The combined training and assessment takes place over 2 days.

The first day includes risk assessments & legal issues. Safe cycle checks, personal & group equipment, personal riding skills at level one, & basic emergency repairs whilst on route, & group management relating to the leadership of groups in the outdoors.

Day two will cover weather forecasts & sources, level two personal riding skills & personal coaching of individuals, & navigation whilst on route.

If candidates do not possess these off road skills, they should attend our beginners and intermediate courses.

At the end of the training / assessment, successful candidates will have their log books signed by the course tutor.

On receipt of booking a student information pack with details of the course syllabus and course location, will be posted to you prior to attending the assessment course.

MIAS AWARD LEVEL 3

LEVEL THREE MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN (MBL3)

 

The Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme (MIAS) MBL3 (Mountainous Terrain) leadership qualification is aimed at MBL2 MIAS guides who wish to upgrade to lead groups in mountain bike activities. This level covers areas defined as mountainous by Mountain training UK.

AALS may require you to hold additional qualifications to work in this terrain (e.g. Mountain Leader, Walking Group Leader or equivalent Military qualifications). Includes Red/Black forest trails.

PLEASE NOTE:

Leaders who wish to upgrade their degree from MBL2 to MBL3 should meet the following requirements:

1. Need to be an MBL 2 Leader or equivalent for at least one year.
2. Have led/guided groups in technical terrain (L2) at least 10 times.
3. Be familiar with advanced riding techniques with drops up to 1metre, technical climbing and descending, roots and rocks.
4. Be proficient with advanced map reading and use of GPS.
5. Have at least 5 mountainous rides (L3) logged in their logbook/Strava.
6. Be able to guide groups beyond 30 mins of cycling assistance.
7. Have good knowledge of trailside repair and be able to offer advice on bike set up.
8. As a professional MTB Guide, the holder of the MIAS Award, should also take care of obtaining a First Aid certificate (at least 2-day course).

BEGINNERS MOUNTAIN BIKE SKILLS CLINIC

 

The aim and objective of Beginners Skills Clinic are to introduce the beginner to the basic techniques required in off road mountain biking. The intention of the session is to deliver quality instruction at a level suited to the participant so as to equip the individual or group with the skills necessary to ride many of the bridleways, towpaths & selective trails.

SPECIAL SESSIONS

We offer special sessions for kids (girls and boys under 12 years old) as well as for women riders.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

– Mountain bike preparation

– Correct use of gears
– Braking technique/timing
– Cornering techniques

*Individual Coaching (one on one) is a session only for you. It ensures that you will make the most out of your time and money, eliminating the possibility of being in a group of riders of different riding ability. After a 1:1 session you will experience significant progress in your riding.

No mountain biking experience is necessary. However, you must be able to ride your bike on flat & even ground before the start of the skills course. The skills session will start with a safe cycle check. During the course you will be given instructions and demonstrations of all the obstacles covered throughout the days activities. The instructor will endeavour to adapt or progress each section according to the persons individual riding ability.

Fitness Level:

You will need a basic level of fitness which will allow you to take part in this physical activity for the duration of the session. However, you will have the chance to recover at regular intervals due to the structure of the session. The day will be centred around demonstration, with individuals practicing several techniques to reinforce the learning process.

Your Bike:

A well serviced mountain bike with off road tyres should be adequate, front suspension is recommended. All participants must bring their own bikes, helmets, gloves and eye protection.
* In case you cannot bring your own mountain bike, we can rent you a full suspension mtb (Scott Genius 950, mod. 2019, 29”) and basic equipment. €50/session.
